Get started on the “pain probing” stage of lean validation for one of your startup guesses. Part 1) Choose the startup guess that you want to attempt to validate. Begin Stage 2 of the Lean Validation Workbook “Pain Probing” by conducting interviews with REAL PEOPLE that you feel may be able to reveal something about the pain you believe is real. These must be face to face, Zoom, or telephone interviews. Online surveys are too informal for this stage of validation. Notes:
This process will take several days, perhaps up to a week to prepare, document, and complete. Start early. You must “get out of the building” to conduct personal interviews.
You must ask your interviewees about at least 3 of your most critical assumptions about the pain for your startup guess. During pain probing you should do everything possible to avoid talking about your potential solution, rather let the interviewee do most of the talking, and try to focus the conversation on the PAIN and what it means to them. For example, you could ask them to describe the pain as they see it, describe what it means to them, what they do to solve it currently, what their thoughts are in relation to how they think it could be solved better or in different ways, whether or not they actually care about solving it in different ways.
You might ask direct questions, or you might try to get at these pain points by asking indirect questions and letting the conversation flow organically to see what they reveal. You should not attempt to lead them to the answer you think you want to hear. Just open the conversation and see what you can discover about the pain. In total you should conduct at least 5 interviews (more is better!). If you believe you will eventually attempt to solve your pain using a Business to Business solution, at least 1-2 of your interviews should be with people that currently are in the industry.
To submit your “pain probing” sheet: Recreate the “Pain Probing” PPT slide (you can find this in the Lean Validation Workbook) and add your assumptions and notes electronically. Notice, there is not much room to write, so be clear and concise. Submit a single PPT slide or PDF for your startup guess.
You can modify the size of the cells on the PPT slide if needed. Part 2) In 50 words or less summarize your most critical findings to date from the “Pain Probing” stage for your startup guess. What pivots are you now considering and/or what will you do next? Write your answer on a single word page.
Checklist for Submitting: Each team should submit 2 files for this activity as described above and listed below:
(1) Pain Probing sheet for your guess. Title of your guess at the top. (2) 50-word summary of critical findings and next steps for your guess. Title of your guess at the top.
