Structural Components of Iconic Buildings: Topic Approval The building I have selected for this assignment is the Burj Khalifa, world’s tallest structure in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The building stands at 2717 feet above ground and
it is iconic in the design, structure, and the systems and materials applied (Bakarman et al., 2023). The building structure is a buttressed core structure with Y shape plan (Bakarman et al., 2023). The structure is not only aesthetic but also functional in resisting wind forces and promoting torsional resistance in the structure. Other than the buttressed core, the main materials used in the building are reinforced concrete, steel, and glass. The exterior cladding of reflective glazing with glass panels help to regulate temperatures in the hot desert conditions of Dubai (Bakarman et al., 2023). The building also has advanced heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that help regulate temperatures. The structural system of the Burj Khalifa is an interesting topic as it presents a landmark construction. Reference
