Discussion Posts will require both individual and a group effort.
1. Individually, you are responsible for demonstrating a depth of understanding from the lectures and readings to answer the prompts. Content from the readings and lectures must be cited like this (Article author or Chapter #, p. #) and (Lecture #, Slide #). Sign your name to the post.
2. As a group, you will continue to integrate with the rich content presented in your lectures and readings when you respond to two discussion board posts made by two of your group members. Address your group members by name when posting. All posts should advance the knowledge in the group. Replies that simply say “I agree” or “I like how you said this” don’t tell us anything new and will not earn you a strong grade. Sign your name.
3. In both the initial and the reply posts, it is often enlightening to integrate your own experiences in health care, both as patients, family members of patients or as health providers. The knowledge you have gained through living your life can advance the conversation, however, these personal experiences do not replace the essential content from the readings and lectures that is needed for a strong grade.
4. First posts are always due by Thursday at 11:59 PM (except the week before Fall Break when it is due earlier). Reply posts to two different students are always due by Sunday at 11:59 PM (except the week before Fall Break when they are due by Friday).
5. Canvas will automatically drop the lowest score out of the Discussion Boards from Modules 0-6, 8-10. Discussion Board posts from Modules 7 and 11 cannot be dropped.

Jamie is an 18 year old girl with a history of severe asthma. As a very young child, she was frequently in the hospital with asthma exacerbations. As she developed during high school, together, her parents, doctors, and Jamie developed an asthma action plan that has worked well for her. The plan includes: using an inhaled corticosteroid daily, regular exercise, and monitoring her functioning with a peak flow meter. If her peak flow numbers decrease or she notices wheezing, the plan is for her to use a short acting beta-agonist inhaler and an oral corticosteroid until she is feeling better and her peak flow measurements are back to normal.
In the fall, Jamie started college in Los Angeles, California at UCLA. About 2 weeks into the semester, wildfires broke out nearby and the smoke was intense, with air quality ratings of yellow/orange (moderately concerning/problem for sensitive groups) most days.
It wouldn’t surprise most college students how quickly her room became a mess. She couldn’t find her peak flow meter; she might have left it somewhere, but she can’t recall. She also doesn’t know where student health is located and is so overwhelmed with classwork, that she keeps forgetting to look it up on the university webpage. When her parents call, she tells them everything is “fine.” Jamie is trying to meet new friends, but it’s a very large school, with large classes. And, her roommate is less than friendly. In the midst of all this, she doesn’t really notice that her wheezing has gotten worse. One night, she is at a party with someone she met in class that morning, and suddenly, she can’t breathe. The ambulance is called and she is hospitalized for the first time in several years.
FIRST PROMPT DIRECTIONS:
You first post should be 4-6 paragraphs and reflect that you did your reading and watched the lecture. You should post your initial analysis of the case by Thursday at 11:59 PM.
1. Describe at least one factor from under each of the headings (each heading has a few factors) in your textbook chapter that you think could be impacting Jamie’s ability to follow through on recommended health behaviors. Study those paragraphs under the headings and subheadings to get a full understanding of these factors. Using only the heading labels without understanding the paragraphs under them  means you will miss out on the learning objectives.
2. Then, explain what is happening in Jamie’s life and why you think each of those factor is important to her health. Relate this back to the concept of health adherence generally. Make sure you cite where the information is coming from like this: “Jamie’s lack of such and such is an important factor (Chapter 4, p.80), because…”
3. In this case, we don’t know much about Jamie’s physician. Using content from the lecture about common physician beliefs about patient behavior, come up with a descriiption of Jamie’s physician and their most recent interactions during her senior year in high school. Talk about the common perceptions of patient behavior, and decide whether your version of Jamie’s physician is like that. Discuss how the physician factors (or medical team factors) could also have an impact on Jamie. Make sure to cite correctly (Lecture, slide #).
4. Choose two of the “Questions for Consideration” in the lecture and discuss either related to Jamie’s case or something you have witnessed yourself in health care. Make sure to cite correctly (Lecture, slide #).
