New Electronic Health Record System
Introduction
The Board of Director of a national healthcare system is considering which electronic health record (EHR) system to use and how to implement the EHR in all of its facilities. As a health care IT consultant, the student will work with various team members at the corporate level to gather information and analyze the efficacy, safety, security, and legal factors, as well as the cost effectiveness, cost-benefit factors of two possible new systems to help them decide whether or not to implement one of them. The student will also recommend a high level implementation plan that considers system cutover and change management.
This is a very “real world” scenario facing organizations of all sizes. The need to make sound fiscal decisions regarding acquisition options; which products to invest in; and how best to implement these technologies and systems once purchased. None of these are easy decisions, which will become abundantly clear as students’ progress through the scenario gathering relevant information from key stakeholders. Issues related to cutover will be presented in the scenario and will definitely need to be taken into consideration when making recommendation to the leadership.

Based on the information provided in the scenario and on an outside review of the relevant literature, the students will recommend the acquisition of an EHR system and provide supporting rationale as well as a high level implementation plan for a new system that considers system cutover and change management. As part of the EHR implementation, the student should also describe a strategy to pilot the system before going “live”. The implementation plan should be logical and well supported. The initial posting should be prepared as a Microsoft™ Word document, and then attached to the unit discussion thread. There is no minimum or maximum in terms of the word count; however, the response should explicitly address all required components of this discussion assignment. The document should be prepared as a practical business deliverable (single-spaced) and reflect higher-level cognitive processing (analysis, synthesis, and evaluation). Support the initial posting with at least 3 references of credible or peer-reviewed sources. The in-text citations and the list of references should be consistent with the APA writing style (7th ed.). To earn the maximum number of points for the initial posting, the overall quality of the writing should be consistent with that expected of a graduate student and industry professional.
