More nurse-patient ratios continue to be a problem in acute care facilities. This issue affects both patient safety and nurses’ job satisfaction. Studies indicate that when there are not enough nurses on duty, more medical errors increase patient mortality and decrease patient satisfaction (Schwenker, 2022; Wang et al., 2020). However, these factors also contribute to nurse burnout, job dissatisfaction, and high turnover rates. While it is vital to have enough nurses for the number of patients, there needs to be more evidence showing exactly how many nurses are needed so that patients are safe and nurses are well. This research aims to examine how nurse-to-patient ratios in acute care settings are related to patient safety outcomes and nurses’ job satisfaction.
