There are a number of reasons greenhouse gases (GHGs) are released into our atmosphere: some are natural, but most are not. Greenhouse gases are classified as CO2, CH4, N2O, and fluorinated gases, in which CO2 is the primary GHG being emitted (EPA, 2022b).
Certainly you may have heard of GHG emissions due to the burning of fossil fuels for energy, but there are other instances you may not have connected with greenhouse gasses, such as wildfires and incineration. While often wildfires are not intentional, their occurrence is almost always due to human activity. In waste management, a large portion of the GHG point sources include incineration.
Review the EPA’s About Risk Assessment webpage and answer the following questions. https://www.epa.gov/risk/about-risk-assessment
Initial Response:
A stressor is a chemical, physical, or biological agent capable of causing adverse effects on human health, safety, or the environment. Using the EPA’s Where You Live: Risk Assessment tool, describe the following: https://www.epa.gov/risk/where-you-live-risk-assessment
Where is the geographical area you are exploring? Boston, MA
What stressor is present?
What environmental medium is it found in?
How much of the stressor is present in the environmental medium in your geographic area?
How much contact or exposure can a person or ecological receptor have with the contaminated environmental medium?
How is the health of humans impacted or how are other ecological receptors affected (e.g., fish killed by lack of oxygen)?
