Question 1:I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the 519 website and found it to be such a great resource.
This week’s lesson about insisting on behavioural change, and rewarding new behaviours resonated with me, especially regarding the transformation in beliefs.
With this in mind, the resource I was particularly drawn to was the ‘Webinars and Training’ page of the site.
In the Webinars and Training section there were workshops for 2SLGBTQ+ families, and families who are interested in creating authentic and inclusive spaces for everyone, as well as public legal education workshops, to inform interested persons about their rights and responsibilities when counter protesting injustices and a 2 hour online course that intends to foster queer and trans-inclusive environments at work and home. The course about building inclusivity at work and at home especially stood out to me as I think it would be a great resource that organizations and/or employers could leverage to ensure they are playing their part in developing an positive work environment for all of their employees to thrive. Additionally creating partnerships with initiatives like The 519, that are representative of diversity, will allow employers to provide their employees with the necessary resources and support to ensure that we bridge the gap of inequality. In an article by the Washington Post, it indicates the importance that we ‘recognize that systemic problems are not solved by education in the absence of collective action. Solutions to racial inequality require a reorganization of what creates inequality in the first place: unequal access to social and material resources.’ Providing employees with knowledge and resources that help even the playing field is integral to cultivating an inclusive workplace culture that employees feel proud of. Happy employees = company success!
I’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts on this proposition. Do you think this would be beneficial for organizations to implement or will their be significant pushback? What other resources could organizations benefit from in order to establish a positive workplace culture (can be found on the 519 website or through other similar initiatives)?
Question 2: This week’s readings delve into the intricate dynamics of workplace culture, negotiation, and communication styles. Putnam and Kolb’s feminist perspective on negotiation challenges traditional notions, emphasizing collaboration over competition. Tannen’s exploration of conversational styles exposes the challenges women face in adhering to narrow gendered expectations at work. The caution against essentialist arguments regarding innate gender differences is crucial. The addition of workplace posters from The 519 addressing transgender inclusion provides valuable insights. The debate on whether societal cultural stereotypes must change to achieve workplace equality sparks thought, as does the discussion on using legislation versus education. In light of recent anti-trans violence, do you believe these human rights advancements are working as intended?
