Purpose
The purpose of this group assignment is to develop a project description and project scope and to illustrate the work of the project in a complete work breakdown structure. Note that the Week 5 Overview has links to videos that are useful for this assignment.
Background
Your team has selected a project and created a project charter to officially begin the project planning process. You will need to develop a detailed description of the project and the product (result) that the project will produce. The scope statement should include a high-level description of what is “in scope” but your team should also consider what is not included in the scope of the project. The product scope describes the features and functions that characterize the product, service, or result. The project scope is the work performed to deliver a product, service, or result with these specified features and functions. Of course, the delivery approach (predictive or adaptive) taken will determine how you develop your project scope; a detailed description of the project scope and deliverables at the beginning of the project or elaborated over multiple iterations where the scope is defined/approved for each iteration when it begins. Normally, the project team would decide on the most appropriate delivery approach for the project; however, for this course project, your team should use the predictive delivery approach. View this video for a brief explanation about creating the project work breakdown structure for a simple construction project.
Assignment Prompt
Once you have read this week’s assigned reading and have a good understanding of the processes used in developing the project scope and creating the project work breakdown structure, you will:
Work through the process of developing a detailed description of the project and product for the project selected for your group project. Use the scope statement template provided here.
From the project description and scope details, create a work breakdown structure that would represent 100 percent of the project scope. Identify at least three major phases (if using a phase-based WBS) or at least three major deliverables (if using a deliverables-based WBS). Note: Although three phases or deliverables is the minimum requirement, the WBS must consist of all the phases or deliverables and work packages necessary to complete the project. Specify additional levels of the WBS, making sure to follow the 100 percent rule. Work packages represent the level of detail that allows you to accurately/easily estimate cost, resources, duration, and to identify quality and risk associated with the work. Decompose the work until you have up to 15 work packages (total across all phases or deliverables) required for the project and associate these work packages under the appropriate phase or deliverable.
